The Trinity: Can We Defend it Biblically?
Every cult and false religion challenges the Trinity and a lot of Christians don't have answers. This will be a simple but detailed examination of how we support the Trinity with the Bible AND how to answer 7 of the typical questions that generally stumble Christians on the topic of the Trinity.

Non believers in The Trinity will commonly present one or more of the below seven questions.
1. Why is the word "trinity" not found in the Bible?
2. How can Jesus be God if Jesus said God is the only true God? (John 17:3)
John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
|
3. How can Jesus be God because He said the Father is Grater than I. (John 14-28)
John 14-28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

4. Who was Jesus Praying to? Can God pray to God?
5. How can Jesus be God if He is God's Son?
6. In Colossians it says that Jesus was created, how can He be God?
Colossians 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
|
7. You can not show me a verse in the Bible where Jesus said He was God, can you?
The First Pillar In The Trinity Is Monotheism.
From Webster's 1828 Dictionary: Monotheism / MON'OTHEISM, noun [Gr. only, and God.] The doctrine or belief of the existence of one God only.
Isaiah 43:10
10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
Isaiah 44:6-8
6 Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them.
8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.
Isaiah 45:21-22
21 Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the Lord? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.
22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
The trinity can be explained as who three times and one what. Thee persons, one God. Within the one being of God there exists three eternal co-equal and co-eternal persons (The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit).
FATHER
The Father is God.
1 Peter 1:2
2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
The Father is not the Son.
Matthew 3:16-17
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Jesus says to baptize in one name, yet, this one name consists of three.
Matthew 28:19
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
SON
Jesus is God.
Colossians 2:8-9
8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
Some people reason that Jesus is 100% man and 100% God.
There are errors in thinking that can come about by this. It is better to say Jesus is truly man, and truly God.
Jesus is clearly God.
Titus 2:13
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
(God and our Saviour Jesus Christ) The rules in the Greek language prove this out to be one in the same.
The Apostle Peter show Jesus is God.
2 Peter 1:1
1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
Look what Jesus said in John 8:58. (This is a statement of deity)
John 8:58
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
A statement of deity appears in Isaiah 43:10.
Jesus predicts the future.
John 13:19
19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.
19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.
The "I am" is also shown in John 8:24.
John 8:24
24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
The "I am" is also shown in John 8:58.
John 8:58
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
The "I am" is also shown in Revelation 22:12-13.
Revelation 22:12-13
12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
The "I am" is also shown in Revelation 1:8.
Revelation 1:8
8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
The Apostle Thomas recognized who Jesus was.
John 20:28-29
28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
The word became flesh.
John 1:1-5
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
John 1:14
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 17:5 is a person-hood statement, it does not say as thee, it says with thee.
John 17:5
5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
HOLY SPIRIT (Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit)
Ananias lies to The Holy Ghost, which is God.
Acts 5:3-4
3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
The Holy Ghost has His own person-hood. The Holy Ghost speaks as God with His own person-hood.
Acts 13:2
2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
Acts 10:19-20
19 While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
20 Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
19 While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
20 Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
As a personage in the New Testament The Holy Ghost:
1. Guides people
2. Testifies to people
3. Speaks to people
4. Discloses to people
5. Glorifies Christ
1. Guides people
2. Testifies to people
3. Speaks to people
4. Discloses to people
5. Glorifies Christ
As a personage The Holy Ghost can be blasphemed against.
Mark 3:29
29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.
29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.
As a personage The Holy Spirit can be grieved.
Ephesians 4:30
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
As a personage The Holy Spirit can be insulted.
Hebrews 10:29
29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
Jesus says to baptize in one name, yet, this one name consists of three.
Matthew 28:19
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
NOW TO THE ABOVE 7 QUESTIONS
Keep This Chart In Mind
1. Why is the word "trinity" not found in the Bible?
The concept of The Trinity is clearly in the Bible. Man came up with the word "TRINITY" to better understand the concept.
You could ask a person, "Is God omniscient?" They will say yes.
From Webster's 1828 Dictionary: Omniscient / OMNIS'CIENT, adjective Having universal knowledge or knowledge of all things; infinitely knowing; all-seeing; as the omniscient God.
Yet, the word "omniscient" is not in the Bible.
You could ask a person, "Is God omnipresent?" They will say yes.
From Webster's 1828 Dictionary: Omnipresent / OMNIPRES'ENT, adjective Present in all places at the same time; ubiquitary; as the omnipresent Jehovah.
Yet, the word "omnipresent" is not in the Bible.
People can see the teaching of omniscient and omnipresent is in the Bible as concepts, thus, they can understand the concept of The Trinity.
"The Trinity" is a theological term used to summarize the concept the Bible teaches of The Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost.
2. How can Jesus be God if Jesus said God is the only true God? (John 17:3)
John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
|
Recall John 1:1-5. This tells us The Word was God.
Remember the "I am" of John 8:58.
John 8:58
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
3. How can Jesus be God because He said the Father is Grater than I. (John 14-28)
John 14-28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
|
John 14-28 is person specific.
The Father is greater than I "in what sense" you must think of. This is person specific. What Jesus doe not say is God is greater than I. Jesus says, "The Father is greater than I." This is about a person of The Trinity, not the "BEING (God)" of The Trinity. "Persons" and "Being" are two different concepts.
Remember what Jesus also said in John 17-5.
John 17:5
5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
Jesus laid aside His glory when He became flesh. What Jesus was looking forward to was the glory He once had with The Father. In a lowly human body, Jesus does not have the glory. The Father being greater is in a temporary sense. We see this in Philippians 2:7-9 below.
Philippians 2:7-9
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
Philippians 2:7-9 is what John 14:28 is referring to.
John 14:28
28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
4. Who was Jesus Praying to? Can God pray to God?
A God praying to a God is Tritheism. This is not The Trinity.
From Webster's 1828 Dictionary: Tritheism / TRITHE'ISM, noun The opinion or doctrine that there are three Gods in the Godhead.
God miming to himself is Modalism. This is not the Trinity.
From Merriam-Webster Dictionary: Modalism / noun mod·al·ism | \ -ᵊlˌizəm \ plural -s / Definition of modalism: the theological doctrine that the members of the Trinity are not three distinct persons but rather three modes or forms of activity (the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) under which God manifests himself
In The Trinity - The Son is a person, The Father is a person, The Holy Spirit is a person. This is Triune. THIS IS THE TRINITY.
From Webster's 1828 Dictionary: Triune / TRI'UNE, adjective [Latin tres and unus.] Three in one; an epithet applied to God, to express the unity of the Godhead in a trinity of persons.
Since The Trinity is three persons, yet one BEING, in this sense, The Son can pray to The Father. The Son is a person, God is the BEING. The trinity can answer the questions that come up on the nature of God, wheras other concepts can not.
5. How can Jesus be God if He is God's Son?
Jesus is The Son in the sense of person. Keep in mind the diagram at the top of this Webpage.
6. In Colossians it says that Jesus was created, how can He be God?
Colossians 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
|
First off, people are always abusing Colossians. That is, the improper use of Colossians.
Colossians 1:15 does not say Jesus is a created being. Jesus is the image of the invisible God. If you want to see God, you look at Jesus. Jesus is the image of the invisible God because He took on human form. Being the first born of all creation here "is refering to the fact Jesus is in charge of all creation."
First born is not alway about DNA and genes.
First born does not always mean first born. Like in Psalm 89:27. First born here means that Jesus will be King of Kings.
Psalm 89:27
27 Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
27 Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
First born does not always mean first born. Like in Exodus 4:22. First born here does not mean Isreal is the first nation that ever exsisted, it means God selecting Israel to be special among the nations.
Exodus 4:22
22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord, Israel is my son, even my firstborn:
22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord, Israel is my son, even my firstborn:
Again, Jesus being the first born of all creation "is refering to the fact Jesus is in charge of all creation."
Keep things in context. Read verses before and after a verse in the Bible. Read beyond Colossians 1:15. By this we see Jesus was before all things. Jesus being before all things, we see he certainly was not created.
Colossians 1:15-20
15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
7. You can not show me a verse in the Bible where Jesus said He was God, can you?
Jesus "CLEARLY" said He was God. See the below verses.
John 1:1
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 10:30
30 I and my Father are one.
30 I and my Father are one.
Isaiah 9:6
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
John 20:28
28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.
John 8:58
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
1. Can one pray to Jesus alone, or to the Holy Spirit alone, or to The Father alone?
God will not be confused. But, the standard example we have from scripture is to pray to The Father, in the name of The Son, through The Spirit.
John 14:13
13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. |
2. Can Jesus forgive sins? John 5:30 says He can do nothing on His own.
John 5:30
30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. Jesus has the "authority" to forgive sins. See Matthew 9:5-7
Matthew 9:5-7
5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? 6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. 7 And he arose, and departed to his house. |
3. How do I think of The Trinity, separately or collectively? Should I ask Jesus for forgiveness, or ask The Trinity?
The standard example we have from scripture is to pray to The Father, in the name of The Son, through The Spirit.
Example: Heavenly Father, we thank you for this food. In the name of Jesus we pray, amen (prayed in sincerity).
|
4. Why does Jesus not know when The Father will have Him return to earth? Does He know now since He had ascended to The Father?
Matthew 24:36
36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. Pastor Mike tends to think that Jesus in human form had limited knowledge, unless The Father provided otherwise. Further, upon ascending to be with The Father, Jesus would once again know all things even though there is no clear scripture to support this.
Keeping in mind God will have Jesus return to earth to rule, Acts 1:6-8 is interesting. Jesus has returned in His glorified body after His resurrection. Jesus does not say that He does not know, He says, "It is not for you to know." So, does He now know? This is not a robust case that Jesus knows when The Father will have Him return to rule, but it is all Pastor Mike has to offer.
Acts 1:6-8
6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. |
5. Does the Old Testament tell us not to believe in The Trinity as in Isaiah 44:6, Isaiah 46:9, and Hosea 13:4 as an example?
Isaiah 44:6
6 Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God. Isaiah 44:6 definitely refutes the tritheism view. The Trinity is monotheistic so Isaiah 44:6 does not affect The Trinity.
Isaiah 46:9
9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, God in Isaiah 46:9 is three persons (The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit). Isaiah 46:9 does not refute The Trinity.
Hosea 13:4
4 Yet I am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me. Hosea 13:4 clearly states there is only one Savior.
Notice "God and our Saviour Jesus Christ" in 2 Peter 1:1.
2 Peter 1:1
1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: Notice "Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ" in 2 Peter 1:11
2 Peter 1:11
11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Jesus is both "God" and "Lord!"
|
6. How do we explain The Trinity to Mormons? They believe that Satan is Jesus' brother.
Pastor Mike did some videos on Mormons.

7. Look at 1 Corinthians 2:10-11. Paul compares The Spirit of God to our spirits within us, but in God's case, we say that God and the spirit are two different persons. In our case however we would not say that our spirit is a different person from us, it is simply us. Why the distinction?
1 Corinthians 2:10-11
10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. We believe in "tota scriptura." This is Latin for “all scripture.” 1 Corinthians 2:10-11 alone is not enough to tell us about God. We have hundreds of Bible verses to tell us about God. 1 Corinthians 2:10-11 is consistent with The Holy Spirit being a person.

9. How does "The Oneness Movement" affect Christians sharing The Gospel?
Pastor Mike says "The Oneness Movement" has not affect him on sharing The Gospel.

10. Can you explain the 7 Spirits in The Book of Revelation? This has always confused me on understanding The Trinity.
The number "7" is a number of completion in the Bible (a fullness number). When it comes to the biblical meanings of number 7, we have to say that it is the number of perfection and completeness. It may be the 7 Spirits show that God is Omniscient and Omnipresent.

11. Can you give non-modalistic analogies of God?
Creation teaches us about God. There is nothing to make an analogy of God. However, I plan to tackle this in the future as a Bible Study.

Every cult and false religion challenges the Trinity and a lot of Christians don't have answers. This will be a simple but detailed examination of how we support the Trinity with the Bible AND how to answer 7 of the typical questions that generally stumble Christians on the topic of the Trinity.
Great Trinity Debate! I only recommend this debate if you can follow the arguments thoughtfully. Dr. White and Dr. Brown did fantastic and demonstrated the truthfulness of the Trinity thoroughly.
