WHAT JESUS CHRIST PREACHED WHEN HE PREACHED THE GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM Pastor Art Watkins of Coden Bible Church (Coden, Alabama) October 30, 2018 We are reminded over and over again by some that Jesus Christ preached the gospel of the kingdom in his earthy ministry. They say, it is a different gospel than the one we preach today. Some even say the cross was not a part of the gospel of the kingdom and that we should not preach it today. But what saith the scriptures? First, it is true that Jesus Christ preached the gospel of the kingdom. Matthew 4:23 says: And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. But, those who remind us over and over again that Jesus preached the gospel of the kingdom; never tell us what he preached when he preached the gospel of the kingdom. Do you know? What exactly did he say and teach and preach when he preached the gospel of the kingdom during his 3 year ministry on earth? What were the words and doctrines that came out of his mouth when he preached the gospel of the kingdom? It’s not hard to figure it out, because the four gospels record everything he said and taught when he preached the gospel of the kingdom. If you want to know what Christ said when he preached the gospel of the kingdom all you have to do is read the four gospels for they are a record of everything he preached and taught when he preached the gospel of the kingdom. When Jesus Christ preached the gospel of the kingdom here is what we know for sure: ****When Christ preached the gospel of the kingdom he preached the New Birth.**** John 3:3-7: Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. This means the new birth is a part of the gospel of the kingdom. ****When Christ preached the gospel of the kingdom he preached the cross for salvation.**** Matthew 20:28: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. John 6:51: I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. John 10:11: I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. John 10:15: As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. John 10:17-18: Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. Matthew 26:27-28: And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. John 3:14-15: And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 12:32-33: And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. This he said, signifying what death he should die. This means the preaching of the cross is a part of the gospel of the kingdom. ****When Christ preached the gospel of the kingdom he gave men everlasting life by believing in him.**** John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:36: He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. John 6:40: And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. Those who believed the gospel of the kingdom preached by Christ were given everlasting life as a gift. ****When Christ preached the gospel of the kingdom he preached freedom from eternal condemnation.**** John 5:24: Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Those who believed the gospel of the kingdom preached by Christ passed from death to life, had everlasting life, and were free from eternal condemnation. ****When Christ preached the gospel of the kingdom he preached the oneness of believers in him and he in them.**** John 14:16-20: And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. Being in Christ and Christ in the believer was one of the blessings of the gospel of the kingdom. ****When Christ preached the gospel of the kingdom he preached the security of believers.**** John 10:27-29: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. Those who believed the gospel of the kingdom were given eternal life and a promise that they would never perish. This means eternal security is a part of the gospel of the kingdom. ****When Christ preached the gospel of the kingdom, he came to save the whole world.**** John 3:16-17: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. John 4:42: And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world. John 6:33: For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. John 6:51: I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. John 12:47: And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. The salvation and reconciliation of the whole world is a part of the gospel of the kingdom. ****When Christ preached the gospel of the kingdom he built his church.**** Matthew 16:18: And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. At the same time Christ preached the gospel of the kingdom he built his church. ****When Christ preached the gospel of the kingdom he preached his second coming to receive his saints unto himself.**** John 14:1-3: Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. Christ’s coming to receive his saints unto himself to be with him forever was a part of the gospel of the kingdom. These are just some of the doctrines and promises Christ preached at the same time he preached the gospel of the kingdom. He also sent all the apostles to preach the gospel of the kingdom including Paul who preached it throughout his ministry. Act 14:22: Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. Acts 19:8: And he (Paul) went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God. Acts 20:25: And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more. Acts 28:23: And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening. Act 28:30-31: And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him, Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him. There is one saving gospel in the Bible. See Isaiah chapter 53, Matthew 20:28, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, and 1 Peter 3:18. But the gospel has more than one name and each name describes a different characteristic of the gospel. For example; it is called the gospel of God in Romans 1:1-3 because it’s source is God and it came from God and not men. It’s called the gospel of Christ in Romans 1:16 for its all about Christ. It’s called the gospel of peace in Romans 10:15 because peace with God is the result of believing it and it’s called the gospel of the kingdom because the kingdom of God is the inheritance a person receives when they believe the gospel. In Ephesians 1:11-12 Paul wrote: In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: Being in Christ they obtained an inheritance and according to Ephesians 5:5 it was in the kingdom of God: For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. For these reasons I preach the gospel of the kingdom. Do you? If not, why not?
