OF COURSE PAUL WROTE HEBREWS By Pastor Art Watkins of Coden Bible Church (Coden, Alabama) April 29, 2010 For many years Christians have debated the authorship of the book of Hebrews. Many do not believe Paul wrote it. But the facts are overwhelming that he wrote it. There is an infallible source who tells us he wrote it: He is the apostle Peter. The apostle Peter writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit says Paul wrote Hebrews. Let me explain: According 1 Peter 2:9 the people that Peter wrote his epistles to were called: A chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, and a peculiar people. From this verse, it is easy to see the people Peter wrote to were Jews or Hebrews. With this verse in mind compare it with 2 Peter 3:15-16 where he wrote: And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you. As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. Do you see what Peter said? He said that Paul wrote an epistle or epistles to the same people he wrote to! Look at it again. He said: OUR BELOVED BROTHER PAUL… HATH WRITTEN UNTO YOU. According to 1 Peter 2:9 Peter wrote his epistles to the Hebrews and if Paul wrote to the same people then Paul wrote to the Hebrews also. This verse proves beyond a doubt Paul wrote a book to the same Hebrews that Peter wrote to and if the book of Hebrews is not that book, then there is a missing book in your Bible! But, that is not all this verse shows us. Paul not only wrote an epistle or epistles to the same people Peter wrote to, but Peter wrote an epistle or epistles to the same people Paul wrote to. It only stands to reason if Paul wrote to the people Peter wrote to, this means Peter wrote to the same people Paul wrote to. Who did Peter write to? We know they were Hebrews, but where were their churches located? In 1 Peter 1:1 he wrote: Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. Notice that Peter wrote to saints in Galatia and Asia. If Paul wrote to the same people Peter wrote to, then he must have written to the saints in Galatia and Asia. We all know he went to Galatia and founded churches in Galatia and wrote an epistle to the saints in Galatia. That book is called Galatians. We also know that Paul went and preached the gospel in Asia and formed churches in Asia (Acts 19:10) and wrote epistles to the saints in Asia. Those epistles are Ephesians and Colossians. (Laodicea also - Col. 4:15) I also find it very interesting that the man who actually wrote the words down on paper that Peter spoke in 1 2 Peter was Silvanus according to 1 Peter 5:12. That’s interesting because he also worked, labored and preached the gospel with Paul according to 2 Cor. 1:19, 1 Thess. 1:1, 2 Thess. 1:1. If Peter and Paul preached two different gospels like the hyper dispensationalists say, this poor man must have been really confused! O how that King James Bible has a habit of walking all over the pre conceived ideas of religious people and their private theories. If your private theories about the book of Hebrews say that Paul did not write it, the best thing you can do is throw that theory in the trash because Peter and Paul say you are wrong. But some folks will not change their mind even if you gave them 100 reasons Paul wrote Hebrews. But of course some folks will argue with a stop sign. This issue concerning the authorship of Hebrews leads me to say again: Its one thing to be a “dispensationalist” its another to be a Bible believer. Its one thing to say you believe the King James Bible is the word of God, its another to believe the words in it mean what they say and say what they mean. God give us more Bible believers!
