Apart from World War 2, the 1940's offered us a lot more than just destructions and famines. The picturesque cinema of these days slowly and gradually isolated the black and white flicks. Veteran actors like Nargis, Dilip Kumar, and several others have poured out their hearts while making movies like Aag, Tnasen, and several others. More than the movies, it was the songs that were known to be quiet admired. Well, in this 40 minute jukebox, we have brought the best black and white songs. Do listen to it!

Please note: You may want to consider beginning this show at 22:00 if you’re here for fun, entertaining video. The section previous to that does well on stage but doesn’t necessarily translate well to video due to its complexity. The opening several minutes are meant to be general pandemonium, and not always understandable dialog. According to the script, "This next section should run about 20 minutes. It should be played quickly and with much overlapping of lines. Some scenes might even be played simultaneously. There is almost always a bustle Onstage: a bustle which grows in intensity as the broadcast time approaches."
All that to say...you're not missing anything if for the first few moments you feel as if you can't understand all the dialog.
The 1940's Radio Hour is a Play with Music by Walton Jones. Full of 1940s music, dancing and old-time sound effects, the play portrays the final holiday broadcast of the Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade on the New York radio station WOV in December 1942.
The Broadway opening of "The 1940's Radio Hour" was October 7th of 1979 at the St. James Theatre.
A Note from a Cast Member:
For theater groups planning on staging this production, here are two important notes I learned during the run of this show. First, while audiences of all ages will love the music of this show, we quickly learned that the sketches and commercials within the radio show are HUGE crowd pleasers. They will likely get the most laughs. All that to say, take time to use sound effects, lighting effects, and all the tricks of the trade to make these “shine.” Audiences LOVE them. Secondly, it can be easy for audiences to get confused about the transition from the “behind the scenes” portion to the actual show. You might consider putting house lights up at the moment the cast begins addressing the audience as the “radio audience.” Perhaps even an audio effect like a P.A. system reverb. Then when the show starts, lights down, and hit it big! Your audience will have as much fun as your cast does. Have at it, and enjoy!

Soundies were an early version of the music video: three-minute musical films, produced in New York City, Chicago, and Hollywood between 1940 and 1946, often including short dance sequences. The completed Soundies were generally released within a few months of their filming; the last group was released in March 1947. The films were displayed on the Panoram, a coin-operated film jukebox or machine music, in nightclubs, bars, restaurants, factory lounges, and amusement centers. Several production companies filmed the Soundies shorts: James Roosevelt's Globe Productions (1940-41), Cinemasters (1940-41), Minoco Productions (1941-43), RCM Productions (1941-46), LOL Productions (1943), Glamourettes (1943), Filmcraft Productions (1943-46), and Alexander Productions (1946).

---From September 3, 1939 onward, radio (or "the wireless"), became a vital source of news and entertainment for the British public and armed forces. Dance bands continued to broadcast boosting morale and adapting to wartime conditions despite occasional shortages of available musicians. Here is a handful of recordings that illustrate just how good and varied these bands could be and how they retained an individual sound and didn't simply adopt a "Glenn Miller style" overnight. Put Your Arms... also proves that Van Phillips really could swing!
---Most of these recordings come from ENSA / ORBS discs or BBC transcriptions. I've done the best I can with sound quality which varies from "rough" to pretty good. The Van Phillips is fairly distorted and My Heart Stood Still has a bad swish, is cracked and even has a piece missing out of the edge of the record so I had to rebuild the opening notes - quite a challenge! It was far too nice to miss out however. I hope you enjoy them.
Geraldo and his Concert Orchestra play:
• Alexander's Ragtime Band
• My Heart Stood Still (vocal Sally Douglas)
• Holiday for Strings
Eric Winstone and his String Tette play:
• Mexico
• In the Still of the Night
• A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening (vocal Alan Kane)
• Bottle Party
Harry Gold and his Pieces of Eight play:
• I'm Confessin' (amateur sax players - listen and learn!)
Van Phillips and his Big Band play:
• Put Your Arms Around Me Honey (vocal Leslie Douglas)
Followed by:
• A Special Cinema Announcement
